User Studies and Research Methods
Data Archive Brain Initiative (DABI) - USC neuroscience cloud data repository to organize, analyze, disseminate, and visualize Data. Conducted research with user and usability tests to gather insights through unmoderated methods, as well as moderated interviews.
• Maze - recorded to better understand users' workflow and behavioral patterns
• Usertesting - unmoderated usability study with talking-out-loud recorded sessions
• Qualtrics - reached out with quick semi-structured questions to solicit SUS feedback
Heat Signature – user journey
user insights
Key issues and insights from user feedback -
• Issue 1 - no guidance while users need to figure out where to start, what to do next, and why?
• Issue 2 - during onboarding, what are the steps and what is the end value using DABI?
• Issue 3 - difficult search function or lack of quick start guide to begin workflow.
• Issue 4 - to aggregate, propagate, and generate data in one platform.
Recommendation After Research
Synthesized user insight and feedback from interviews and focus groups, with heuristic analyses, below are optimizations to improve user experience, get rid of assumption, with clearer direction.
• Rec 1 - inform users with infographic to demonstrate features with end result expectation.
• Rec 2 - recommendation dashboard as Call-to-Action to guide users find data quickly.
• Rec 3 - recognition with imagery, iconography, and animation to better guide user experience.
• Rec 4 - streamline search features to dynamically filter and suggest accurate workflow pipelines.
• Rec 5 - consolidatefiles viewable and editable within platform and not leaving for third-party apps.
Interactive Visuals to Inform and Educate
• Animated/interactive infographic demonstrating the sequences of the DABI streamline workflow
• Showing from step 1 thru step 5 with the final output of data and into downloadable files
• Reinforce the DABI key workflows and data recommendations for research collection

Dynamic and Visual Search to Find Data Faster
• Search A - keyword search filter with smart auto recommendation
• Search B - dynamically driven search list and with visual cue (institute logos) for quicker recognition • 3 workflow steps - [ 1 ] search data set > [ 2 ]select data set > [ 3 ]export/process data set
DABI search workflow highlight
Dashboard with High-level View on Status
• [ 1 ] To-Do workflow- list of select data sets needed to revisit and process • [2 ] In-Progress workflow- list of submitted data sets being generated with est. time and notification • [ 3 ]Completed workflow - list of data created and on the cloud and is ready for download or viewing

Final Output Viewable in 1 Centralized Platform
• Download or view - generated data set can be viewed instantly without using a third-party app • Viewable formats - list of data formats can be view in platform; text, pdf, matlab, and other formats
Data sets created are viewable and interactive within DABI native UI without leaving own platform
DABI output visual
Data in real-time - text and graphic can be seen, interact, and manipulate within platform.

Measured Outcome and Impact
• Users are better able to search and pinpoint accurate data quicker through visual cues and workflow. • Users stayed on site longer as generated files are viewable in-platform as opposed to 3rd-party apps. • Enhanced onboarding process to guide new/existing users with better learning module and tooltips.
